Robert Ulich became honorary professor of philosophy at the Technical University of Dresden in 1928. He was a member of the SPD and follower of religious socialism of Paul Tillich. In 1934 he emigrated to the United States. He became a lecturer (1937-1960 Professor) of Philosophy and History of Education at the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
